Aamir Khan is known to not mince his words when giving feedback about films and performances. He would avoid going to preview screenings so that he doesn’t feel cornered into praising something that he didn’t like. As it turns out, this honesty applies not only to himself and others, but also his son, Junaid Khan. Junaid made his acting debut last year in the film Maharaj, which debuted on Netflix. The historical drama was produced by Yash Raj Films, and directed by Siddharth P Malhotra.
At the trailer launch event of Junaid’s second film, Loveyapa, Aamir spoke about his performance in his debut film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, and admitted that he wasn’t very impressed with himself. He also said that Junaid was equally raw in Maharaj, and that he could’ve done better in the film. Fielding a question at the event, he said, “When Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was first released, I thought that my work in it was a little ‘kachcha’. I did some scenes really well, like a few songs. But other moments irritated me as an actor; I felt I was too awkward. You could see the rawness, and I used to feel it. Juhi was excellent in the film, she was fabulous. She had such control over her lines, and I would speak too fast. I was very unhappy with the way… But the film came out, and I felt that I could have done better.”

Aamir continued, “Luckily, the audience appreciated my work, and the story was so good that it worked. I got an opportunity to learn and improve, because I didn’t go to film school. The first few years of my career were a learning period for me. I used to keep working on myself, and this is something I’ve retained to this day. I don’t lie to myself. I understand my weaknesses, and I work on them. Failure is a stepping stone, you shouldn’t be afraid of it.”
Opening up about the similarities that he found between his first film performance and Junaid’s, he added, “I watched Junaid’s first film, and I liked it. But if I’m being really honest, I think the level of his performance was more or less the same as the level of my performance in QSQT. He was really good in some scenes, like the climax. But in some scenes, I felt that he could’ve done better. He looked a little ‘kachcha’. I can’t say that it was a flawless performance. As a father, I’m telling you. I felt that our level was similar in our first films. Hopefully, he’ll get better, and I can already see that he has made a huge jump in his second film. That gives me joy.”
Also starring Khushi Kapoor and directed by Advait Chandan, Loveyapa will be released on February 7 in theatres. Khushi, the daughter of the late actor Sridevi, made her debut in The Archies. Advait last directed Aamir in Laal Singh Chaddha.
