A tourist from Mumbai suffered injuries, allegedly after an altercation with employees of a beach shack, in North Goa early on Friday. Police said they have arrested five shack employees, who are from Himachal Pradesh and Kerala.
The incident took place around 3.30 am in front of Planet Goa beach shack at Calangute beach. The complainant alleged that at least six employees of the shack, including waiters and security guards, slapped a friend of his after an argument over a petty issue.
He alleged that the accused then went on to “slap and kick” his friends, and that one of his friends, Rohit, was hit on the head with a wooden stick and suffered a serious injury.
Police said the victim was discharged from hospital after undergoing treatment.
In a statement, North Goa Superintendent of Police Akshat Kaushal said, “A case has been registered. Further investigation is in progress to ascertain details of the incident as well as the motive and circumstances leading to the assault. All the accused worked as guards and waiters at the shack. The shack was closed when the fight occurred.”
Police said five people, identified as Noufal P T (28), Rohit Kumar (27), Abhishek Kumar (24), Vinod Kumar (31) and Surinder Kumar (28), were arrested.
The incident comes days after a 28-year-old tourist from Andhra Pradesh was killed in Calangute following an altercation with a beach shack owner and workers over placing an order past midnight. Police arrested five people, including the shack owner, in the case.
On Friday evening, the SP held a meeting with shack owners in the coastal belt to discuss the recent incidents of violence. After the meeting, Kaushal told the media, “We held a meeting today with shack owners and made it clear that no one should take the law into their hands. If someone is misbehaving, they should inform the police. Tourist police and staff from Calangute police station have been extensively deployed at these stretches for patrolling. The shack owners said they will cooperate with the police to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future.”
