One person was injured after a BEST bus left unattended rolled forward at the Kannamwar Nagar depot in Vikhroli and crashed into a tea stall on Saturday.
The injured person was taken to a local hospital where his condition was reported to be stable.
According to BEST officials, the driver kept the bus engine running and headed to the restroom. The bus subsequently rolled forward, hitting two daily wage labourers, who worked at a construction site nearby, before crashing into a tea stall. One of the labourers, Lifan Rana (20), was injured in the accident.
“Despite the injury, Rana did not require severe medical treatment and declined to file a complaint,” said a BEST official. Police Inspector Santosh Koli confirmed that the incident would be investigated only if a formal complaint was filed by the injured.
Kannamwar Nagar depot is located in an area with heavy traffic and two colleges nearby, making it a hub of pedestrian activity.
The wet-leased bus of Daga Group Maruti Company was on route number 185 and belonged to Ghatkopar Depot. The incident comes weeks after a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus lost control in Kurla, resulting in the death of nine people.
The Vikhroli accident has further intensified scrutiny of BEST’s safety measures and driver accountability.
