Ravibir Singh Grewal, a 60-year-old horticulturist and IT entrepreneur, is set to become the president of the Chandigarh Golf Club for the fifth time, as he was the sole candidate to file his nomination for the post before the deadline on Saturday. Grewal, who defeated five-time club president Birinder Singh Gill by 401 votes in last year’s election, will now be elected unopposed in the process, which has become a mere formality scheduled for January 25.
In addition to Grewal, the 11-member executive committee will also be chosen without contest, as only one candidate filed nominations for each post.
Grewal first assumed the role of club president as acting president in 2016 and later served two full terms in 2017-18 and 2021-22. In last year’s elections, he secured 790 votes compared to Gill’s 389. An alumnus of Doon School, Dehradun, Grewal is a pioneer in horticulture in Punjab and also runs an IT business. He began his association with the club as treasurer in 2011 and was elected vice-president in 2016. He took over as acting president after the demise of then-president IPS Mann.
During his tenure as acting president in 2016, Grewal resolved ESI cases worth Rs 13.59 lakh and income tax appeals and refunds amounting to Rs 24 lakh and Rs 19 lakh for the years 2010 and 2011, respectively. In 2017, he successfully negotiated a new 33-year lease for the club with the UT Administration, addressing a long-pending issue since the previous lease ended in 2008. Last year, the club also hosted the third edition of the Chandigarh Golf League under his leadership. Notably, Grewal was elected unopposed in 2021 as well.
The proposed members of the executive committee are Dr GS Kochhar, Harjinder Singh Kang, Pratap Hoon, Gursimran Singh Sibia, Dr Raman Abrol, Raman Singh Gill, Sanjeev Verma, Capt Mohanbir Singh (Retd), Zoravar Singh, Gursimrat Singh Jawandha, and Gurpreet Singh Bakshi.
