In his first rally this poll season just weeks ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will launch the party’s campaign at the “Jai Bheem-Jai Samvidhan” public meeting in Seelampur on Monday.

Exuding confidence, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge in Delhi, Qazi Nizamuddin, said, “Congress workers from across the Capital and the general public will attend the rally. Congress is on a strong footing in Delhi after Rahul Gandhi’s constant interaction with all sections of people in the Capital.”

Even as top Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP leaders continue to raise poll pitch ahead of the Assembly polls, due on February 5, Congress has been running a relatively subdued campaign. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already addressed two events in the Capital where he attacked AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s government.

Qazi Nizamuddin, however, said that there is a significant impact due to Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav’s month-long ‘Delhi Nyay Yatra’, which he claimed, had garnered participation from lakhs of residents. The Congress held a month-long ‘Delhi Nyay Yatra’ in November to connect with voters — along the lines of Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ and ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ — which concluded on December 7.

“To bring back Congress to power and to save the city from the devastation caused by 11 years of misrule by the (Arvind) Kejriwal government, which was aided and abetted by the BJP, the people are ready to now give their support to the Congress,” he insisted during a press briefing.

“Whether they are truck drivers, pottery makers, bakers, tailors, cobblers, barbers, mechanics, vegetable sellers, or farmers — Rahul Gandhi has interacted with all sections of people, which has given him a deep insight into the struggles, trials, and tribulations of the common people in their everyday life, and since then, he has continued to closely interact with them,” he said.

The rally in Seelampur is expected to set the tone for an aggressive campaign by the Delhi Congress, as per party insiders. “The Congress would be fighting to throw out the corrupt and incompetent AAP from power, save the city from devastation, and put the Capital back on the development track,” Nizamuddin added.

The votes for the February 5 Assembly polls will be counted on February 8.

In the 2015 and 2020 Delhi Assembly polls, the AAP won 67 and 62 seats respectively. The BJP won three seats in 2015 and eight in 2020 while the Congress drew a blank.
