Filmmaker Kiran Rao has spoken highly of her former husband, actor Aamir Khan‘s performance in her directorial debut, Dhobi Ghat. “I feel he is great in Dhobi Ghat. He is lovely in my film. He is the best,” she said. When asked about the experience of directing her then husband, superstar Aamir Khan, Kiran admitted that it was a unique challenge. “Not nerve-wracking but I tortured him a little bit. If he was giving some suggestions, I’d be like, ‘no, no, no’ (she would snap),” she revealed in an interview with Filmfare.
Kiran explained that she was under a lot of pressure while making the film, which was shot on a tiny budget. “It was also my first film and I was in panic. Firstly it was on a tiny, micro-budget, and I was panicking that I wouldn’t get to do what I wanted,” she said.
As a result, Kiran found herself taking out her frustrations on Aamir, who was the producer and one of the lead actors in the film. “I was very patient with everyone else on set, because obviously I couldn’t shout at anybody else and I had to seem like I knew what I was doing with everybody else. But with, Aamir I could snap because he is my husband,” she admitted.
However, Aamir soon put his foot down and asked Kiran to treat him like any other actor on set. “So after one point, after the first day or something he said, ‘Listen I am an actor, right now I am not the producer, or your husband. Treat me like one of the other actors…please take my suggestions, be calm, explain to me nicely.’ So I was like, ‘ok, sorry,’” Kiran recalled.
Aamir and Kiran divorced in 2021. He recently produced her film Laapataa Ladies.
