Varun Dhawan is a fitness enthusiast, which is apparent through his dedication to the gym. But it’s not just exercise; the Bhediya actor is also conscious of his diet as he recently told podcast host Ranveer Allahabadia how he has ditched having black coffee first thing in the morning and switched to drinking blonde roasts since they are “easier on the gut.”

Intrigued, we spoke to an expert to verify his claim and find out the best way to incorporate this beverage into a regular diet.

Deepalakshmi, registered dietitian at The Cleft and Craniofacial Centre and Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, said the claim that blonde roast coffee is easier on the gut can be subjective and varies based on individual tolerance and preparation methods.

“Blonde roast coffee is a type that is lightly roasted, resulting in a milder flavour profile than medium or dark roasts. They have a higher natural acidity than darker roasts due to their shorter roasting time. This acidity may cause discomfort for sensitive individuals but can be tolerable or even refreshing for others,” she explained.

According to her, blonde roasts tend to have slightly more caffeine than darker roasts, which could be a concern for those prone to stomach irritation, as caffeine can stimulate acid production. This coffee might feel lighter on the palate, but its suitability for gut health depends on personal digestive sensitivity and how it’s brewed or consumed.

A blonde roast coffee undergoes a lighter roasting process, allowing it to retain much of the bean’s natural characteristics, including its original flavours, acids, and beneficial compounds. “The blonde roast offers a bright and lighter taste with a smoother finish than medium or dark roasts. The light roasting process preserves chlorogenic acids, powerful antioxidants, that help to neutralise free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and preventing cellular damage, which is typically diminished in darker roasts, enhancing its health benefits,” she told indianexpress.com.

Deepalakshmi suggested starting slowly with a single cup to see how the gut reacts, especially for those with a sensitive stomach. “Drinking blonde roast coffee alongside a meal can also buffer its acidity and reduce the chance of stomach irritation,” she said.

While blonde roast coffee has certain advantages, like retaining antioxidants, she concluded that it might not universally be “easier on the gut.” Individual tolerance to its acidity and caffeine levels plays a significant role. Including it in a diet requires mindful consumption and experimenting with preparation methods to suit personal preferences.
